The film revolves around the military life of Heneral Luna. It feels like you are really watching history. I love that attention to detail with designing the set and props from their clothing to the weapons at that time. The establishing shots really get the whole view of the scene, showcasing the time of the American colonization. For that, it really doesn’t have a problem because it was well crafted and executed. The music was on the spot really good, it is well arranged and it was perfect for the film.īeing a historical film, the props and set have to be the most authentic representation as possible. It brings out the tone and emotions of the film by supporting what was being seen by what is being heard. The music really sets the mood of the film. With the director also working on the musical score of the film, the music is in sync with his ideas on the film. We all know that it’s unnatural that a candle is this bright on a scene, but it becomes natural for us because it’s also what we see in real life. The lighting on the set just amplifies the given light source so that it wouldn’t be dark on the shot. The olden times don’t have advanced lightings, they only used candles. It doesn’t need to be fancy, it just needs to work. It’s like the same lighting that your eyes see when you perceive lighting in a specific place. They heavily rely on natural lighting than artificial lighting because most of the scenes were shot in daylight.

It never feels like it’s lacking some artistic design, it is on par with the scene. They also used a bunch of handhelds and tracking shots to film certain scenes which is great because it is more natural to watch than standard static shots, it gives the film more depth on the established locations. From general meetings to outdoor shots, even if Luna was talking to his soldiers, the focus is almost always the whole scene and not a few people alone with exceptions when they are only 2 people talking which they would get a close-up shot on that. What I notice is that they used quite a lot of wide-angle in the film as well as using deep focus to really capture the scene. With a budget of 80 Million Pesos, it is one of the most expensive historical-themed films in the country.Ĭinematographer Pong Ignacio takes the visuals of the film more interesting by using camera framing and angles that are less popular and make it work with the context of the film. Heneral Luna directed by Jerrold Tarog and produced by productions is one of my favorite Filipino films to this date, we can't really argue that it is also adored by many people.
